Crocosmia Lucifer Winter Tips

Transcript

Hi this is Yolanda Vanveen from HowToGardenVideos.com and today I’m in sunny Boring, Oregon with Jane Stetner and we’re talking all about her garden and we found a clump of Crocosmia Lucifer and we’re going to talk about what to do with it over the winter.

So Jane, I bet this was gorgeous when it came up and bloomed gorgeous red flowers that the humming birds were in.

Yes, Yes. The humming birds love this.

It’s done blooming, it’s the end of November and it’s gone to seed. So what do you usually do with it at this point?

I don’t’ save the seed, this winter’s over for us here in Boring, Oregon but I just cut it down to the ground and it comes back for me the next spring. I just do little care for this thing.

So I know that the seeds do develop into flower bulbs, so you can always scatter the seeds and plant them back into the ground or you can even leave them as they are over the winter because the birds love them as a food source, but I’m always amazed that the little seeds develop into blubs and then they develop into a big plant and so the bulbs are still underneath here. So whether you save the seeds or not, they’re going to come back but it’s true too whenever they start looking really ratty like they are now. I just kind of trim them out.

I still like to plant the seeds back in because it might take up to seven years to get a bloom off the seeds but even if you take them and I kind of leave them right underneath the trees right here, it does get enough sun so it’s not too shady here for them. But I’m amazed they’ll come back they do really well in the northwest apparently in colder climates, they won’t make it over the winter but I just compost the foliage and they’re good to go.

Ok. I will take these seeds and put them on the bottom. Maybe this will get fuller by the spring or summer time and I will have more of this crocosmia.

You’ll have lots of babies, like I said it takes a few years for them to really get blooming but I have found they’re one of the most pretty, most gorgeous plants in the world. They are. Humming birds love them.

Sprinkle the seeds around your flower beds or give them to your friends

Crocosmia do best in climates similar to South Africa near the ocean. They can handle cold if protected well but can not handle long freezes.
